An amulet (from Latin amuletum; earliest extant use in Natural History [Pliny],meaning "an object that protects a person from trouble"), a close cousin of the talisman consists of any object intended to bring good luck and/or protection to its owner. Potential amulets include: gems or simple stones, statues, coins, drawings, pendants, rings, plants, animals, etc.;
Manyamulets have negative powers of repulsion, others act to achieve a positive, beneficial purpose. Most common are those that act to ensure success in love, marriage, fertility and even in business transactions. A special type is the propitiatory Hindu amulet bearing a representation of a deity or several deities. Wearing this becomes an act of worship and a personal means of communicating with the Divine, whose protection is constantly solicited.
