Women Fancy Shawls from Shalin-India

Apart from their incomparable craftsmanship, what set the shawls of Kashmir apart was the fine quality of their wool. Wool itself has a long tradition in India, judging from the copious references in ancient literature and texts. According to legend, woolen clothes were the creation of Lord Brahma,a fabric so pure that it was deemed worthy for use as a prayer mat or asan and for use in religious rituals.

Thus from the earliest times to the present times to the presentshawl have been part of the great tradition of Indian textiles, especially that of weaving. Though their glory and variety from region would need a far bigger book, we make a beginning by looking at a few of the most spectacular and different types. What follows is by no means exhaustive, but represent the varied contexts in which the were woven: famed thought the world as the luxurious of war and glory and love; or simple as a practical necessity against biting cold yet always made vivid with colour and decoration, the hallmarks of the Indian craftsman.

Within the overall ambit of woollen cloths, the shawl holds a particular and pre-eminent place. Like many other Indian garments—the sari, for example, the lungi or the dhoti I shawls are open and unstitched, thus giving them a multiplicity of uses. There is scarcely a I shawl from any part of India that does not carry an element of decoration; beyond the motifs and the colours, however, beyond the surface beauty, there are resonances of other meanings accumulated over centuries.
